This is Karl Rove tactics, their research has found that referring to people as homosexual instead of gay makes swing voters more likely to oppose gay rights and politicians who support them. This is because the word homosexual has the word “sex” in it, so it makes those readers visualize gay sex.

Don’t get me wrong - the gravity of the accident is immense. But 43 years is a very long time to spend in jail for an accident without any malice or intent. A very, very long time. Plus, it doesn’t seem like he was a bad citizen prior to the accident.
They should sentence him to community service for the rest of his life. That would be more productive.
